Laparoscopy Q & A

What is a laparoscopy?

A laparoscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that uses a laparoscope, which is a type of surgical camera that can be inserted into your body through a tiny incision and allows your surgeon to view your internal organs without having to make a large, invasive incision.

Then, if needed, additional incisions are made for the insertion of tiny surgical tools to perform any necessary procedures.

Dr. Berg at Arcadia Ob/Gyn is a skilled surgeon and uses this minimally invasive approach to perform many gynecological procedures when indicated.

What are the benefits of laparoscopy?

There’s always some amount of risk when you’re having surgery. But because laparoscopy involves only small incisions, your overall risks may be less than with traditional open surgery. Other benefits include:

  • Smaller scars
  • Less pain
  • Faster healing
  • Reduced risk for infection

While the laparoscopic surgery offers many benefits, it may take longer to perform the procedure than traditional open surgery. Laparoscopic procedures are also conducted using general anesthesia.

What procedures can laparoscopy perform?

Many gynecological procedures can be performed using laparoscopy. Some of the most common include:

  • Tubal ligation
  • Hysterectomy
  • Fibroid removal
  • Ectopic pregnancy
  • Treating certain types of cancers
  • Treatment of pelvic floor disorders
  • Ovarian cyst removal

Laparoscopy is also a tool Dr. Berg uses to diagnose gynecological conditions. He may suggest the minimally invasive procedure to confirm a suspected diagnosis that he can’t determine using other less invasive measures, such as endometriosis. He may also recommend the procedure to further evaluate what may be the cause of your gynecological symptoms, such as pelvic pain or infertility.

Am I a good candidate for a laparoscopy?

Dr. Berg determines if you’re a good candidate for a laparoscopy during your consultation at Arcadia Ob/Gyn. While he prefers the less invasive approach for surgical procedures, it may not make the safest option for you. He determines the surgical method that’s best for you based on your need for surgery, overall health, and surgical history.

The laparoscopy has revolutionized gynecological care. To learn more about the procedure and if it’s an option for your surgery, call the Arcadia Ob/Gyn office or book an appointment online.
